My instructor finally graded my last project for Intermediate Flash:

Hi Steve!
Wow! Someone must have a lot of time on his hands ;-) Your assignment looks great, is incredibly original, fun and it works perfectly! The most impressive aspect is that you did all of this without using any advanced material (I assume you have some previous programming experience). Your code is really neatly organized and clear. Good idea to have pacman's rotation shift in the direction he's going as well. You should have a lot of fun in the advanced class :)

I don't want to toot my own horn or anything, but I should note that I did the entire project in about two hours, after flying for ten hours and then sleeping for about 12. I also avoided using such "advanced material" such as switch statements, because in the past I've been asked not to use stuff that hasn't been introduced in the class yet. The result is a ton of if statements and about four times as much code as there needs to be, but hey, I can adapt.

I have one more Flash class with these folks starting at the end of the month, and then I think I'll just start doing projects and learning more on my own. In the meantime, I want to take their CSS and Javascript courses, and get my skills sharpened up in those areas.

Intermediate Flash, Week 5

My final project for Intermediate Flash. I had to create a project where one could change properties on an object using buttons. You had to change the position of the object constantly while a button was pressed, as well as transparency (alpha). You also had to demonstrate turning the object's visibility off and on via buttons, as well as resetting everything. I chose to drive a little Pac Man around, because that was the first thing that popped in my head when I started doing the project. You can drive him with the directional arrows that are around the "joystick", adjust his alpha with the arrows there, toggle his visibility off and on using the faux-checkbox I made, and reset everything. Bonus stuff I did was make him respond to arrow keys (you have to click inside the movie first before it will respond to them, and some other trickery to make the checkbox seem like a toggle.

I think I did pretty well, and much better than the assignment actually called for.

This week's assignment was to create and use a collapsable menu that affected an item on the Stage. I decided to show off some (well... all...) of Rudy's tricks:

Click Rudy's name to get the menu. After he does a trick, you can tell him he's a good boy to go back to his default state, which I guess is "twitch".

UPDATE: Parts of this don't seem to be working on Scotch's computer, which has a little bit older version of Flash than I have, so you might need to update Flash for it to work right. If you do check this out, please let me know in the comments if it's working...

I passed my first Flash class! The instructor said of my final project:

Very well done! You accomplished much more than was necessary! Nice animations, good understanding of code and masking, and nicely organized library as well. Very nice pictures too :) We look forward to seeing you again in the intermediate class!

Sweet! I have two weeks off before the next class begins... Hoping there will be more coding involved.

My final project is here. The assignment was to do a slideshow with multiple scenes and buttons that take you between them. If you use Flash, you can download my .fla file and see what I did. Please excuse the "design" elements of the project; I was working on this late at night over the weekend after doing moving sutff all day.
