So awesome
All this They Might Be Giants talk today (resulting from the covers QotD) got me thinking about one of my favorite moments in TMBG history. It was still pretty early in their career when they were invited to play on the Tonight Show. They didn't have a full band yet, so they got a little help from the Doc Severinsen Orchestra.
This video is such a brilliant moment. It's one of my favorite bands in their early days, rolling with one of the world's most renowned and respected big bands. You can see the excitement and nervousness on their faces, but they pull it off with all the grace and showmanship of any show they play today, twenty some odd years later. Doc's band looks like they're just putting in a day at the office, perhaps contemplating where to take the wife for the anniversary or what color to paint the outside of the garage, while John and John are clearly thinking, "Ok... I can die happy after this."
Awesome. I'm glad this is on YouTube so I don't have to go to the trouble of ripping it from the Gigantic DVD myself.

Holy crap they look young!!!! And that song is crazy crazy crazy with all that brass... Awesome. Thank you for this...
Oh yeah... :-)
Damn, such a joyous performance.
Oh man... I remember watching this when it aired. It was so awesome. My FAVORITE band ON THE TONIGHT SHOW! They played "Istanbul" on the same show, and I remember Leno commenting that someone was regarding them like "a dog who heard a new kind of noise."
They played Instanbul too?!! Does anyone know where that is? I'd love to see it!
I have it on video tape (if it hasn't disintegrated from being in storage for over 15 years), but with no way to get it digitized. And that helps no one. If this will appease, here's a vault of amassed TMBG media:

Yeah, that is so great. It makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, even now. Hmmmm, so when are they coming through town again? That last Bimbos show was fun!
TMBG always had interesting songs. I wonder what ever happend to my cd of them.
