Intruder!
For the past week or so, I've been feeding Lisa's kitties while she's been over in Japan, doing karaoke with Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson. Lisa's apartment is the second floor, but the stairs to go up are inside her front door. So, you go in the front door and immediately up a flight of stairs. Her mail slot is in the front door, about a foot from the bottom. The mailman leaves the slot open, and Newton likes to hang out down there, watching the world and occasionally taking a swipe at something that gets close enough.
Today, while adding some water to the kitties' water fountain, I watched Newton stop eating and tear off to the bottom of the stairs. Weird. I looked down and saw a hand coming in through the slot, waving its fingers around frantically. I heard a voice saying, "Where's the kitty? Where's the kitty??" Newton was quick to oblige his five-digit admirer, rubbing up against the hand and getting pets in what appeared to be some deranged kitty glory hole arrangement with the anonymous stranger. Newton looked up at me as if to watch for signs that he should be worried, as the strange hand played with him for a couple minutes. After a while, Newton got bored and came back upstairs to eat some more. The hand lingered for a while, finally attempting to entice Newton with a large leaf, which it then left sticking in and out of the mail slot. Newton went down and retrieved it, leaving it just inside the door... perhaps to give the stranger a sense of satisfaction.
